REPORT

Shimizu’s quest to progress from the Levain Cup group stage ended in frustration after a rip-roaring six goal Shizuoka Derby at the IAI Stadium Nihondaira. Were there any neutrals in attendance they would have left thoroughly entertained, but the joy of the travelling section was tempered by results elsewhere. Even victory in their final group match will not in itself be sufficient to secure passage onwards for Iwata. Their fate will be determined by the outcome of other games.

The guests were quickest out of the gates with Adaílton hitting a five minute brace beginning just before the half hour. Kaneko halved the league shortly before half time to bring his team back into the game, the number 30 emphatically converted his spot kick having been scythed down in the area by Fujita. Kitagawa struck a fine equalizer on the half volley eight minutes after the restart, and with the bit between their teeth the game looked firmly in S-Pulse’s control. It was not to be however, the away team reestablishing their lead via a corner just past the hour, then putting the game beyond doubt as S-Pulse went all in looking for a second equalizer.

One game remains in the Levain Cup group stage, but for now attention returns to the bread and butter of the league. This Sunday brings the visit of Sagan Tosu, a team who share a similar record to S-Pulse thus far this season. Sitting just two points but four spots ahead in the league, victory will give S-Pulse the chance to jump a number of places up the table.
