REPORT
Renaissance confirmed? It seems so as Shimizu S-Pulse has beaten a club lying fifth in the League with one of the best defenses in the country.

The first half was a bit disappointing with Cerezo playing a conservative game and S-Pulse making too many simple errors and poorly wasting half chances.

Head Coach rightfully proceeded to two major changes at the beginning of the second that would change to game completely. It started well in the 49th minute when Renato, Nishizawa and Carlinhos combined for a quick short passes sequence half of them headings seeing Renato beat the ball away from the opposite goalkeeper and scores with a splendid back scissors kick into an empty net.

In the 50th minute Carlinhos could have scored on a Cerezo defense’s blunder. In the 64th minute S-Pulse conceded an excellent goal from a cross that caught the defense unawares.

Whereas S-Pulse had tended to fold in the last minutes of the game for almost the whole season this time they reversed the tendency and were rewarded in the 86th minute which saw Golden Substitute Nakamura combine with Carlinhos with the former scoring his first goal of the season with a sweet left-handed shot across the goal.

Then it was time to prove that the defense had improved and they did well until the 84th minute when Renato recuperated the ball away another Cerezo attack to pass it to Nakamura who then kick a long pass forward to Teerasil for a one on one confrontation. The Cerezo goalkeeper somehow blocked Teerasil’s close range shot but the latter managed to retrieve it before passing to Carlinhos running at full speed from the defense to slot an easy killer in.

A an exciting and excellent game especially in the second half when substitutes demonstrated they had a full part in the team’s performance. The change to a more classical 4-4-2 formation seems to pay off in defense but is flexible enough to suit S-Pulse’s natural attacking play.

We shall see if they can confirm the good impression on Saturday in Sapporo!
