REPORT

Not much of a derby…

This other important (actually all the games left will be so important!) game had nonetheless started with a promise. Playing against a team seemingly employing a defensive 4-5-1 with a forward playing more as a foil than anything else Shimizu S-Pulse attacked from the very beginning and had at least one clear chance until the 27th minute.

Jubilo was basically relying on the dangerous Adailton playing like a backward left winger. The same player who already had led two dangerous counterattacks cut a complacent Kamata’s pass to open himself an open road with all S-Pulse defenders committed in all out attack.

A technical and strategic blunder which cost the whole match. A few minutes later Matsubara was directly sent off for violent retaliation, a big disservice to his team who found themselves one down for three quarters of the game and missing his vital role for a few important games to come what with a heavy penalty to serve. From then on it was an almost impossible catch up game.

It soon became a nightmare when another blunder allowed Nakamura to score directly from a left side corner kick in the 62th minute. Jubilo contented themselves with biding their time and pounce on a weakened S-Pulse defensive errors. Which happened again in the 73rd minute when Yamada slotted home a poor clearance.

S-Pulse nonetheless, and that is an encouraging sign, continued to attack when they could and Mitchell Duke and Thiago Alves both came close to save the pride of their team in driving rain.

From now on it will be a long battle against teams mired in the bottom half of the League. Pride and guts will become more important than strategy. Let’s hope that our team and club will make us proud!
