REPORT
Another crafty win away from home!

Like against Cerezo Osaka at home last Sunday the game plan was based on a solid defense involving everyone with an eye on quick counters especially along their opponents’ flanks to catch unawares with precise crosses. Truth to say the players almost enjoyed defense as much as offense all knew they would be backed up when occasionally bypassed. Gamba was forced to keep to a sterile side and back passes all day long taking all the meaning out of a seemingly dominating possession.

It turned to frustration when Kitagawa was clumsily brought down inside the box in the 27th minute. The same player made no mistake in converting the penalty kick taking his tally to 7 for the year. Not bad for someone who could not secure a starting place last year.

In the 54th minute Crislan had to leave the field because of injury to be substituted by new signing Douglas who made an instant impact by running along and around the left flank of Gamba demonstrating he was not only a striker but also a game maker if need be. In the 65th minute another sharp counter saw Kitagawa becoming the provider by running pas his opponents’ left flank and curl the perfect cross behind the defense for Douglas to head in a splendid goal on debut.

U. Hwang’s great long range goal in the 75th minute came too late for Gamba against a S-Pulse defending with teeth and nails.

Accordingly with 7 wins for 3 draws and 7 losses S-Pulse ends on an even note this first half of this year’s league, a vast improvement on last year’s nightmare. They can now look forward to a positive second half of the season starting with another difficult away game in Yokohama next Saturday!
