REPORT
A match to remember for a very long time to come!
But not for good reasons only.

First we suddenly found ourselves paying respect and the players to wear black bands when we learned that GM Kume passed away the day before.
It was also supposed to be a day for celebrations to commemorate Akihiro Hyodo’s retirement after long years of service to Japanese football and Shimizu S-Pulse.

But in the end the game concluded in acrimony and pandemonium despite an incredible denouement.

S-Pulse dominated most of the first half but were caught unawares in the 26th minute by Iniesta’s brilliant loop over the defense which was powerfully ended by Fujita.

Shimizu went back onto the attack and Kitagawa saw his shot hit the post before pressure provoked a blunder by the Vissel defense that Kawai was able to cash on.

S-Pulse attacked the second half with more resolve but a rare Vissel counter caught them unawares in the 52nd minute when Furuhashi was left unmarked to lob a heading over the goalkeeper. Things went from bad to worse when a fluke goal occurred when Visssel’s Mita’s missed cross somehow floated over Rokutan’s head.

But S-Pulse did not give up.

Pushed on by a record crowd they piled on the pressure and just did not stop attacking. Finally in the 87th minute Douglas headed in Chong Tese’s perfect cross. And that was when the game started to really deteriorate with fouls done behind the authorities’ back. Unending injuries was the cause for one of the longest additional time witnessed this year. First a goal was disallowed for off side. But another corner kick saw goalkeeper Rokutan rise above all to head in the equalizer in the 14th minute of extra time. S-Pulse almost got another chance but Hyodo’s curled free kick could not find the head of an S-Pulse’s player.

The game finished with Vissel with only 8 players after two red cards and an injury after all substitutions and S-Pulse with 10 due to injury after substitutions. Kawai and Tatsuta ended in hospital.

The game actually finished in a general melee for the second time. I must say here that Iniesta did his best to separate and calm down players whereas some of his elevated teammates repeatedly did their best to reignite the fights.

Coach Jōnsson refused to be drawn into an argument during the post-game interviews and praised the fighting spirit of his team who managed an incredible draw against all odds. This game will become a reference for the future and next year when S-Pulse will be feared by all!
