Another gritty draw! And it could even have been better!
Back to last year’s 4-4-2 system the defense held well and compact except in one instance. The offense proved very dangerous even if chances went begging. The whole team is steadily coming back to its true form and the coming holiday and returning star players will make a better proposition soon enough.
For all the so-called stars (more have been than anything else) playing for Vissel, Shimizu S-Pulse held their nerves and had plenty of chances in the first half with Kitagawa and Nakamura coming very close.
The second half started with a defense double blunder, more unlucky than anything else, but that is football for you. S-Pulse went on courageously never giving up and it is the substitutes again that brought hope in the names of Tese and Elsinho who combined in the 88th minute following a failed clearance by their opponents’ defense. Elsinho reacted fat enough to pass the ball to Tese who curled it over and past a helpless goalkeeper. The same Tese could have snatched victory out of defeat’s jaws the next minute had he not kicked over the bar from 8 meters point blank from the opposite goal.
It proved nonetheless a very encouraging performance in an adverse situation that will boost the team’s confidence no end. The team is not established yet and positions still have to earned and kept. Expect some surprises in two weeks’ time against Shonan Bellmare! And the fans should have plenty of satisfaction!
