REPORT
At long last!

Shimizu S-Pulse hold at last their first win in this year’s Meiji Yasuda J1 League! And at the most difficult but also at the most meaningful since it was grabbed with both arms and legs at a derby match played away from home against Jubilo Iwata!

But it should have been so much an easier road!

After only one close call in the beginning of the first half it became an incessant assault at the Jubilo’s goal by the orange wave. Chances and attempts at goal came from everywhere but S-Pulse had to wait until the 36th minute when Jubilo made a hash of a clearance that was fully exploited by a resurgent Tese who over everyone to head the all very important first goal.

The second half saw more of the same but S-Pulse had to wait until the 58th minute when Nakamura intercepted a poor pass and sweetly sent Kitagawa in open space. The latter calmly converted the pass into goal and S-Pulse held the game by the scruff of the neck. Kaneko could and should have made 3-nil soon after to kill the game once and for all, but the introduction of attacking players by Jubilo saw a different game now that S-Pulse had spent so much energy attacking their opponents from all corners of the field. A fine goal was conceded in the 76th minute and they had to spend the last quarter of an hour and substantial time addition defending with nails and teeth.

But in the end and succeeded and grabbed a well-deserved win in the end send their many fans in rapture and victory dance. The pressure on the team was epitomized by their youngest player, Tatsuta collapsing in tears of relief upon the final whistle. Truth to tell it had been a very rough game against an uncompromising Jubilo whose style is so different from S-Pulse’s pleasing style. But on that day S-Pulse put barbed wire on their defense and they have finally struck the right balance. This win should give them a lot of confidence for the rest of the season but they will have to show it during the next game at home on Saturday against Cerezo Osaka!

The fans will be there to help them along!
