REPORT
They finally built it! THE WALL!

For all the loss of their main striker, Koya Kitagawa, to Rapid Wien in Austria, S-Pulse seems to have at last struck on the right balance. The immediate inclusion of new signing Kazunori Yoshimoto allowed them adopt a more compact 4-5-1 formation more suited to the individual skills of all players involved.

With solidity finally insured behind their backs the midfield spread all over the width of the pitch can now either erect a first defensive wall or hassle their opponents in a tight group and pounce on any mistakes or intercepted passes. Such a strategy allowed them to concede a ridiculous but unproductive amount of possession to their opponents who could only manage a single shot on target in the whole match in spite of 11 corner kicks.

On the other hand S-Pulse were far more dangerous on the few occasions they stole the same possession.

Douglas was a constant thorn in the Marinos’ defense even when facing three opponents at the same time and came so close to score on both sides of Nishizawa’s strike in the 50th minute.

That goal could well become the new trademark of the Orange Wave when Renato blocked Marcos Junior before the wall was snatched by Kawai who immediately send Nishizawa through the middle of a disorganized defense before the latter calmly slotted the all past an outstretched opposite goal keeper.

It does not make for pleasant football as before, but the collective speed of the midfield is put to better use than incessant back passes.

Build a wall, contain your opponents and strike quickly both on the wings or through the dead center knowing that the bench can replicate the same any time they come to replace tired team mates.

The new strategy has been forced onto S-Pulse by the attitude of the majority of the J 1 League clubs but it can be very exciting when they pounce with skills and speed!

Now, they will have to confirm their new identity against strugglers Matsumoto Yamaga nex Saturday! The fans deserve it!
