REPORT
Have Shimizu S-Pulse at long last showed their potential?

Maybe, but this massive win must be also be considered in the context of a game opposing them to a club which have recently gone through all kinds of trouble, both internal and external.

Nevertheless it was a practically perfect performance that will give them a lot of self-belief after recent setback or games gone the wire.

In spite of the early injury forcing Renato, the pillar of the defense to retire early, the play was composed and at times truly exciting proving once again that S-Pulse is an attacking team here to please incredible fans and whoever likes the game. But the defense is gradually coming back stronger forgetting some recent horror shows.

Although their game was based on quick counters they managed twice as many shots as their opponents and some of the goals were a joy to watch especially Elsinho’s two beauties proving that a team able to score with their backs is truly to fear.

His first goal came after he dribbled his way up the pitch before combining in a perfect one-two with Nishizawa and giving no chance to the goal keeper with a sweet low shot inside the right post. The second one surprised the Bellmare defense when he took himself a short left corner kick quickly passing to Kawai who relayed to Nishizawa who made the last pass before the Brazilian slotted it in again against a bemused Bellmare’s defense.

And S-Pulse scored twice again within the next four minutes first with Matsubara’s low cross finding Kawai who shot low inside the right post and Nishizawa netting in a perfect cross by Takeuchi who had been found running into Bellmare’s right flank by Kaneko’s precise pass.

By half time (4-0) the result was without doubt but S-Pulse kept up the pressure and scored two more goals. The fifth goal resulted from relentless S-Pulse’s pressure when Kaneko dispossessed a slow defender sending Douglas for his 11th goal of the season. The sixth goal was the real icing on the cake when Elsinho from the right flank smoothly passed forward to Kawai who immediately relayed to Douglas on his left before the latter passed without for the bounce to a totally free Nishizawa who did not make any mistake. As for the defense goal keeper Okubo has only a few occasions to show his solidity.

Now the next step is an away game in two weeks’ time to Urawa Reds, another struggling team who nonetheless has always been very strong against S-Pulse.

Let’s hope that S-Pulse will reassure their deserving fans once for all!
