REPORT

The first Derby between Shimizu S-Pulse and Fujieda MYFC (also called the “Sankoku/Three Countries Derby together with Jubilo Iwata) was certainly exciting with a clinical S-Pulse dominating a somewhat unlucky but very courageous Fujieda side.

The first half was completely under S-Pulse’s command while the second half saw a Fujieda side bent on attacking on all fronts and forcing Shimizu to defend with teeth and nails.

At the end of the day there was much difference between stats with 14 attempts at goal for Shimizu against 10 for Fujieda while the newly promoted neighbours had more corner kicks, 7 to 2, while Shimizu conceded almost twice as many free kicks.

It all started very quickly with the first of many counters by Shimizu S-Pulse with an intercepted throw that reached Inui, who had another big game, before he passed to Nakayama who tried to dribble his way through three defenders before losing his balance, but the last two Fujieda defenders contrived to interfere with each other leaving the ball rolling between them to a lurking Santana who made no mistake from close range.

In the 13th minute another counter found Inui who passed to Carlinhos running past Fujieda’ right flank before sending a cross, but the ball was intercepted by a defender’s stretched arm resulting in a somewhat lucky penalty that Carlinhos himself cooly converted.

Two minutes later Carlinhos intercepted a suicidal pass by an over adventurous Fujieda defense before running past the left flank again before sending the perfect low cross to Kitagawa, who ad just replaced Santana victim of a light concussion, for a simple enough goal.

In the 27th minute it was the turn of Kitagawa stealing the ball before relaying it to Inui who sent Kitagawa through running at full pace beating an advancing opposite keeper.

In the 32nd minute Fujieda had their first chance of the day after intercepting a lax S-Pulse defense’s pass but Gonda produced his first save of the match overextending himself to palm away the powerful low shot from outside the box.

In the 42nd minute Kitagawa should have scored again when a quick counter sent him with only the goalkeeper to beat but the latter managed to push the ball away against the far post.

The second half started with Fujieda focusing on attack only.

In the 52minute Gonda somehow palmed away a corner kick first volleyed from outside the box and headed on the way by another Fujieda forward.

In the 56th minute a very dangerous Fujieda’s attack not properly defended by S-Pulse should have led to a score but the last Fujieda forward point-blank volley hit the bar.

But in the 72nd minute S-Pulse showed their superiority and experience when a counter found Kitagawa running inside the box past Fujieda’s left flank before crossing back to Carlnhos who had all the world of the day to hammer the ball home.

All in all, S-Pulse was clinically efficient, missing only one more true occasion while at least three great chances went begging for Fujieda.

Now, S-Pulse will have to show the same efficiency on Wednesday away against JEF United on Wednesday who are a better side than their current place would suggest!
