REPORT
Gritty win that took us back to the lead and put us firmly on track on the road to promotion!
Second consecutive away win after being led!
Like any Derby it proved a highly unpredictable game that kept fans jumping up and down all day. Talking of fans, Fujieda MYFC established a new record for home match attendance (half of them Shimizu S-Pulse fans!)!
On the day S-Pulse had more possession but Fujieda, keeping to a defense/quick counter strategy were dangerous enough to make us doubt, especially during the first half.
The starting members had to reshuffled due to the hectic schedule and we reverted to a more classic 4-5-1 formation with the introduction of Nishizawa after a long absence.
In the 5th minute we should have done better with a dangerous incursion inside Fujieda’s box but the finishing was too poor to worry the keeper.
We had to wait until the 23rd minute for the next chance, this time from Fujieda whose left wing caused problems all day sent a dangerous cross that was fortunately wasted.
But 2 minutes later almost carbon copy of the previous chance had once again Fujieda’s left wing running past the defense before crossing for an excellent goal taking advantage of a flat-footed S-Pulse defense.
The scored could have been doubled in the 32nd minute after a corner kick was headed home but disallowed for illegal interference on goalkeeper Gonda.
In the 37th minute Fujieda almost us a goal after a big blunder from two defenders but Inui’s shot was somehow parried just above the bar.
This first did not bode well but S-Pulse resolutely attacked in the 2nd half and a corner kick in the 48th minute ended in a deviated kick that was not spotted.
But then in less than 10 minutes of play S-Pulse sealed the game:
In the 52nd minute S-Pulse did well to go past a slow Fujieda’s defense around and inside the box to end wit a back heel from Kitagawa to allow Nishizawa to score from short range to celebrate his return.
In the 58th minute center back Sumiyoshi jumped above everyone to head home a vicious corner kick from the same Nishizawa.
In the 60th minute Kitagawa intercepted a back pass from the Fujieda’s defense before passing to Inui on his eft who deftly score inside the far post.
It was a real hammer blow but Fujieda did not give up. This was a fierce Derby after all.
But before that in the 73rd minute S-Pulse wasted a good counter with the final head flying just above the bar and a beaten keeper.
In the 6th minute Gonda had to produce a world-class save parrying the ball away above the bar after a dangerous free kick was headed to goal.
4 minutes in extra time a tired S-Pulse defense allowed a long-range shot that was just too good for even Gonda to come within a late equalizer.
But we held up until the final whistle of an entertaining game which could have in all honesty gone anywhere.
Next to come is a game against Yokohama FC, our rivals for an eventual title next Saturday.
But the “home game” will held at the National Stadium in Tokyo, a venue we have not won for the last 22 years, that gives a somewhat unearned advantage to Yokohama. On the other hand all the fans who lie in the area, and they are many will be on hand to carry our team!
